 Y Hikes and Community Gardens
The YMCA provides the community with opportunities to witness and work with our natural world. Please join us for weekend hikes through our beautiful countryside, or come dig with us in "the garden. " 
 
 
SPRING 2008 HIKE SCHEDULE

ALL Y HIKES are free and open to the public. 

Meet at the YMCA Lancaster House, 403 Washington St. SW at 1:30pm, Sunday afternoons, unless otherwise noted. 

Hikers may caravan or carpool to the hike site as many trails have very limited parking.  Return time is targeted to be 5:00pm.   

What to Bring: Water, Snacks, and wear sturdy shoes!

Cascades

**

In Little Stoney Creek Valley, the trail ascends a gorge for 2 miles to a picturesque 66 foot waterfall. Trail is gravel and moderate in slope.

Gateway Trail

**

A 4 mile hike that begins at Blacksburg Natural Heritage Park and climbs Brush Mountain over to Pandapas Pond.

A 7 mile round trip hike with a 1,200 foot climb in elevation to panoramic views of the Catawba and Roanoke Valleys.

Sinking Creek Mtn.

A 4 mile round trip hike over open hills with a steep climb to the mountain’s crest.

This 9 mile hike provides scenic mountain views directly above the Cascades Water Fall.  Participants will enjoy seeing Cascades Water Fall from below and above.  Most of it is very moderate hiking.

A 10 mile round trip hike with a steep stretch partway along to a panoramic vista at Tinker Cliffs

Angels Rest

A steep ascent on the AT on Pearis Mountain, this 6 mile round trip hike has sweeping views of the New River Valley and Pearisburg.

Dragon’s Tooth

This hike, steep at times, is on the Appalachian Trail at Cove Mountain with a spectacular view at the pinnacle.

Off the AT, this hike travels around a rocky little creek, past an old reservoir, and up the side of a very steep mountain.

On this hike participants will enjoy scenery that includes great views from the top of Brush Mountain. This hike is relatively flat in nature.

Falls Ridge

Bring the young ones on this family friendly hike in Ellett Valley. View travertine falls and an old lime kiln on this Nature Conservancy property.

Ribble Trail

This hike begins in upland hardwoods; and passes a small stream. The trail crosses through several white pine groves and rhododendron thickets.

Community Gardens
The community gardens are located on Roanoke Street, adjacent to the Westview Cemetary in Blacksburg. Half plots (15 x 20') are $25 and full plots (25 x 25') are $35.
