Volunteer with the YMCA at Virginia Tech

Whether you are a student and community member, the Y has short-term or long-term volunteer opportunities that can easily fit into your busy schedule. If you are interested in offering your time and talent, but you are not sure where or how you would like to help?

Please call us at 961-9622 or email us at ymca@vtymca.org

Y Student Programs (YSP)
The YMCA at Virginia Tech was founded in 1873 to serve the students of VPI. That tradition continues today with dozens of volunteer and leadership opportunities for students.

After-School Programs -- The YMCA at Virginia Tech conducts free after-school programs that are run by student volunteers and include tutoring, games, healthy snacks, physical activities, and field trips. The areas served are: Shawnee Apartments, Lantern Ridge Apartments, & Clayton Estates Park.

Project Home Repair -- Community and student volunteers are encouraged to participate as we complete minor and moderate home repairs for families in need.

K-12 Tutoring

-- We provide volunteers for in-classroom as well as one-on-one tutoring for students, ages K to 12. All tutoring is free of charge regardless of income level.

If you would like to volunteer for any of these programs, please contact Sandy Wirt at 540-231-3734 or e-mail sandywirt@vtymca.org.  For more information see our our YSP Website

International Programs
No special skills required! Just a desire to interact with people from all over the world. We offer two programs, "Mornings" and ESL Classes through the YMCA's International Program.

Join us for "Mornings" each Wednesday morning, 9:30 to 11:30 at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church on Tom's Creek and Price's Fork Roads in the community room. You will help Internationals practice English, and you will enjoy fun activities.

We also need help with our ESL classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays mornings, as well as Wednesday nights.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Silvia Klaus at 540-231-6962, email to sklausge@vt.edu.

Crafts Fair & Special Events
The YMCA at Virginia Tech will hold its 38th YMCA Crafts Fair November 9th,10th & 11th, 2007 at the University Mall in Blacksburg. We need volunteers to work during the fair and to help with tear-down.

This is a perfect opportunity for a group project or a wonderful way for an individual to volunteer.

If you would like to work and have fun, please contact Terri Lynn Howard at 540-961-9622  terrilynn@vtymca.org

Volunteer to be a "Book End", build computers, or just general sorting and pricing.

The Y's Thrift Shops are the primary funding source for our community outreach programs. This is a wonderful group opportunity!
