YMCA Pottery Studio
Over the last five years, the “Y” has expanded its service to the community by purchasing an empty grocery store to retrofit into “The Y Center” to house continuing education programs (Open U), the Y Thrift Shop, Y Offices and community programs. The building renovation was intended to be completed in stages as funding was made available. Phase I included completion of space for the Y Thrift Store, a dance studio/all purpose room, and office space. Phase II will include a community pottery studio, event room, teaching kitchen, multi-purpose community room, crafts classroom, The highest priority for Phase II is the pottery studio.
From 1980 until 2008 the YMCA at Virginia Tech (the Y) ran a very popular pottery and art program through its Open University program, which is known locally as “Open U.” The pottery program, which relied on studio space at Virginia Tech, served local potters and artists and fostered a sense of community among participants. Unfortunately, in May 2008, Virginia Tech closed the pottery studio that the Y rented, making the nearest public pottery studio for local citizens over 50 miles away. The resulting loss of facilities left community members without a valuable creative outlet and eliminated a key revenue stream for the YMCA at VT.
Pottery Project Plan
The Y intends to complete a community pottery studio to expand affordable art opportunities and promote community development. We began work on this studio after receiving a grant from the Corning Foundation. The matching support we have raised to date in the current economy is a testament to the belief in this vision. The design of the studio, which was created with input from several of the Y’s pottery instructors and regional potters, includes a glazing area, hand-build area, 12 pottery wheels, kiln room, and ample work space.
The Y Pottery Studio ties directly into the Y’s mission, while also providing revenue through class and pottery pass fees that help support the Y. Traditional pottery classes and a new pottery pass system will provide pottery and art opportunities to hundreds of community members each year.
Pottery Room Budget Summary
Completing the pottery studio fills the gap in services to the community. Below is a budget for the project including estimated cost, other funding sources, and funds raised to date. Note: Green renovation using LEEDS standards as guidelines
As of May 1, 2010, we have raised $67,000 towards the project and have $61,000 to go! Help us reach our goal by contributing today. Large and small gifts add up to make this a wonderful, long-lasting asset for the community.
