The 15 acre Hale –Y Community Garden provides space for organic gardening, exploration of environmental/gardening-based community projects, and environmental education.

The Garden fosters a social, inclusive community atmosphere and encourages the sustainable use and preservation of the property through shared work, shared conversation and shared learning.

The Roper Solar Greenhouse, designed by Dr. L. David Roper, Virginia Tech Professor Emeritus of Physics, uses a subterranean heat sink of rocks/soil/water to create a moderate growing environment that extends the growing season through the winter.
