TOWN OF BLACKSBURG IS NOW ACCEPTING PLASTICS #1-7 CURBSIDE

Beginning September 20, 2011, the Town of Blacksburg’s curbside residential recycling program will expand to include plastics #3 – #7 in addition to #1 and #2 plastic bottles and jugs. Plastics labeled #1 and #2 that are not considered a bottle or jug may also be recycled with the new expanded collection program. Accepted within this expanded plastics recycling program include, but are not limited to, yogurt containers, microwave food trays, plastic cups, plastic coffee containers, and plastic tubs that are free of food residue. Styrofoam items will not be accepted under this program.

YOUR GUIDE TO RECYCLING AT THE Y

WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED IN THE Y'S SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING BINS?   

This drop off site, located on the North side of the Y's parking lot at 1000 N. Main Street, is a "single stream" recycling receptacle - all materials go into one container; no sorting is necessary.

  • #1-#7 rigid plastic containers including bottles, jugs, widemouth tubs, and trays (clean of food waste)
  • Aluminum food & beverage containers
  • Steel/tin cans such as soup and vegetable cans
  • Aluminum foil & pie pans
  • Glass containers: jars and bottles
  • Aerosol cans (empty)
  • Rigid plastics which include plastic milk/soda crates, plastic buckets with metal handles, plastic laundry baskets, plastic lawn furniture, plastic totes, plastic drums, plastic coolers, plastic flower pots, plastic drinking cups/glasses, plastic 5-gallon water bottles, plastic pallets, plastic toys, and empty plastic garbage/recycling bins
  • Clear, bagged plastic film (for example: grocery bags contained within 1-bag, or stretch film and/or shrink/wrap contained within 1-bag) 
  • Newspapers (with inserts)
  • Magazines and catalogs
  • Junk mail
  • Cardboard and paperboard boxes (including all cereal boxes without the liners, frozen food packaging, etc.)
  • Corrugated cardboard

WHAT CANNOT BE RECYCLED AT THE Y?

  • Used paper towels, tissues
  • Used paper plates, cups, etc.
  • Metallic wrapping paper
  • Wax paper, laminated paper
  • Any paper contaminated with food waste or grease such as pizza boxes or to-go containers
  • Loose, shredded paper (must be contained in one tied or sealed bag)
  • Styrofoam (cups, plates, bowls, to-go containers, and foam packing materials of any kinds)
  • Materials contaminated with food waste/grease
  • Trash/Food waste
  • Colored plastic film (such as candy and food wrappers or bags,
  • colored plastic bags)
  • Loose plastic film (must be contained within one bag!)
